Supermarkets after the electricity blackout: are they prepared for the next crisis?

Supermarket power blackout: when the cold chain is broken

The electricity blackout that paralysed a large part of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula brought supermarkets face to face with a harsh reality: the vulnerability of the cold chain. According to Asedas, losses reached at least 53 million euros due to the withdrawal of fresh, refrigerated and frozen products that could not guarantee food safety.

In addition to these losses, other costs derived from the blackout, such as fuel for emergency generators, transport, product recalls, security and logistics, affected chains such as Eroski, Carrefour, Lidl and Dia, further increasing the economic impact.

Millions in losses after the power blackout leave a clear lesson for the food industry

Large chains such as Mercadona, Carrefour and El Corte Inglés managed to keep their stores open thanks to their emergency generators, while many others, such as Dia and Ahorramas, had to partially close or reduce operations. Small shops, largely without back-up systems, were forced to shut down completely.

The conclusion is clear: having generators is necessary, but not always sufficient. System autonomy, proper fuel management and reliable back-up make the difference between keeping the doors open or accumulating millions in losses.

Our fuel transfer units and preventive polishing systems keep the fuel in the tanks free of impurities and in optimum condition. In this way, we ensure their immediate availability for the correct operation of emergency generators in the event of a power cut.

How can Inpro help to ensure that emergency systems work when it really matters?

At Inpro we design fuel transfer and preventive polishing systems that ensure that emergency generator sets work when they are needed most. Our equipment keeps stored fuel clean and ready for use, ensuring autonomy, reliability and operational continuity in supermarkets and critical retail facilities.

Advantages of having Inpro equipment in large supermarkets:

They ensure the continuous supply of emergency generators.

Diesel fuel transfer systems designed for high consumption and multiple equipment.

Preventive polishing systems (SAFA) to keep fuel clean in the tanks and ready for use.

Energy reliability that avoids millions in losses due to breakage of the cold chain.
